What is Satyagraha?

Satyagraha is a philosophy and practice of nonviolent resistance developed by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Gandhi deployed satyagraha in campaigns for Indian independence and also during his earlier struggles in South Africa.

Term: Satyagraha

Gandhi coined the term Satyagraha to describe his philosophy of nonviolent resistance. In developing satyagraha, Gandhi was influenced by the concept of ahimsa in the Hindu Upanishads and the tenets of Jainism.
